With Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail now out of Early Access and fully released for all, Warriors of Light are well into their new journey in the land of Tural. The main attraction for most will be the new main story quests that include a fascinating battle for succession in the tropical locale, starring everyone’s favorite Hrothgar, Wuk Lamat. But it turns out that a side-quest can spoil how that narrative wraps up and FF14 players are warning each other to avoid it to preserve the experience.
The side-quest in question is called “Once a Riddler, Now a Ruler,” and it can be picked up in the main city of Tuliyollal after completing the level 95 MSQ (main scenario quest) “Road to the Golden City.” However, as players warn on the official FF14 forums and Reddit, completing this quest immediately will spoil a major plot twist in the Dawntrail expansion. That’s because the final lines of dialogue in the side-quest flat-out tell you what happens in the main scenario quest (MSQ) “Dawn of a New Tomorrow” which you also get access to after completing “Road to the Golden City.”
“Once a Riddler, Now a Ruler” is the rare FF14 side quest that doesn’t mark out its objectives with icons on the map. Rather, as the name suggests, an NPC will give you riddles to solve that will guide you from location to location. These exist throughout FF14’s expansions and are often some of the most unique and enjoyable quests, so it isn’t hard to imagine many will immediately want to complete it as a welcome break from the MSQ. To avoid the issue of spoiling yourself, though, it’s suggested that you don’t even pick up the quest until finishing “Dawn of a New Tomorrow.”
One post left on the official forums in the Bug Report section warns about the quest, clearly in the hopes of informing Square Enix of the issue. In their post, the writer says that the side-quest, “should likely be locked to not be available until the completion of ‘Dawn of a New Tomorrow.” Until an official change is implemented, Warriors of Light will continue to warn each other about “Once a Riddler, Now a Ruler,” to keep the joy of discovery alive in Dawntrail.
