A bizarrely quiet and slightly squeaking scream in the middle of Kraven The Hunter is one of the weirdest movie moments I’ve experienced in 2024, and more people need to see it.
Kraven The Hunter is the latest Sony-produced Spider-Man spin-off to hit theaters. It’s also one of the biggest box office bombs of 2024. That’s impressive in a year with movies like the awful Borderlands adaptation and the Crow remake everyone forgot about. But because very few people have actually seen Kraven, one of the weirdest 20 seconds of cinema in 2024 has mostly flown under the radar. I’m here to hopefully change that and bring this wonderful scene to more people.
First off, here’s the very short scene in question. Some context: The man wearing the backpack is (or will become) Rhino, and he’s very mad after learning some bad news from a henchman.
If you’re like me, you probably re-watched that moment at least a few times before hopping down here to read this sentence. Seriously? What is going on? I’m fixated on this clip. While popping it in here and writing this paragraph, I ended up re-watching it like five more times.
Everything about it is perfectly horrible. The bland set, the flat line delivery, the backpack that is far too small for that man, and of course the hissing-but-mostly-silent scream and the awkward silence that follows.
So what actually happened here? Perhaps this is just how the actor wanted the character to scream in that moment? Maybe the director was like, “Do a weird quiet scream, okay!”
My personal theory, and it seems to be a popular one online, is that this cobbled-together blockbuster that was dumped in December with little marketing probably didn’t have many people looking at it closely. Perhaps the actor on set was told to pretend to scream, squeaking a bit as he did so, with the intention that they would ADR in a yell later. That helps protect his voice across a busy day. But then someone uh…forgot to add the scream in post production. Whatever the reasoning or thinking behind it, the result is the weirdest movie moment of 2024, one that was sadly buried in Kraven The Hunter, a movie so bland and bad nobody cared to watch it.
