In September, we got our first good look at the upcoming live-action Minecraft movie. And it looked weird. Now, we have a new trailer for the film and while it still looks odd, at least it’s jam-packed with stuff from the original Minecraft game, including scary nighttime enemies, Redstone contraptions, wolf taming, and even some recognizable music.
On November 19, after releasing a behind-the-scenes video about the upcoming A Minecraft Movie, Warner Bros. released a new, longer trailer for the live-action video game adaption based on the hit blocky survival game developed by Mojang.

In the trailer, we learn that Jack Black’s Steve grew up always wanting to mine and build stuff, but was denied because he was a small child. (I’m glad he wasn’t allowed to go into a mineshaft as a child. That seems reasonable to me.) As an adult, he enters the mine and starts digging and somehow ends up in the video game world of Minecraft.
Once there, we hear a song from the original game in the background as Steve explores the blocky world of Minecraft. He meets a wolf and gives him a bone, which is exactly how you tame them in the game. He also plops down blocks of dirt in a line, missing a few spots, which is pretty true to most people’s first minutes in Minecraft. Later on, we see Steve showing off his various Redstone creations, including a minecart track and a machine that kills and cooks chickens with lava. (That’s a thing people do in Minecraft.)
My favorite part of the trailer might be the moments in which Steve shows off his stash and base. This is something I’ve done before when new people join my Minecraft world to play with me. And the moment a character tosses his one Ender Pearl, which lets you teleport anywhere, reminded me of times when friends would grab rare loot or items and use them or lose them without me knowing.
I have no idea if this movie is going to be good. I still think it looks weird, even if I know it’s meant for kids. But at the very least it seems like it’s going to be filled with actual direct references to how Minecraft works and how people play it. That’s neat and at the very least has me intrigued to see A Minecraft Movie when it arrives in theaters on April 4, 2025.
