The Black Steel Greatshield is a Greatshield that can only be obtained in Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. You’ll need to defeat a boss in a pretty well-hidden area to get your hands on this one, but those looking for top-tier physical and Holy protection should make an effort to do so.
Here’s what you need to know about the Black Steel Greatshield and where to find it.
Black Steel Greatshield stats and features
The Black Steel Greatshield has a weight of 19.5 and requires the following stats to wield:
The shield comes equipped with Ash of War: Shield Bash. This Ash of War braces your shield and then rams your enemies with it while never dropping your guard. Weak foes can even be shoved backward or staggered by the blow. Have fun knocking some soldiers off the side of castle walls!
The Black Steel Greatshield can be upgraded to +25 with standard Smithing Stones.
Black Steel Greatshield item description
The Black Steel Greatshield’s item description reads:
“Weighty shields carried by the Black Knights, servants of Messmer the Impaler. Made of black steel with decorative embellishments in gold.
Symbolic of their iron conviction in their crusade, the Black Knights will never yield. Nor will they ever doubt their purpose.”
Where to find the Black Steel Greatshield
The Black Steel Greatshield is received upon defeating Black Knight Garrew in Fog Rift Fort. However, reaching this well-hidden location can be tricky. When you’re ready to track it down, head to Scadu Altus and make your way to the Scadu Altus West Site of Grace.
From where you spawn at the Site of Grace, walk forward to the very edge of the cliff and look down. Here, you should notice platforms sticking off the side of the walls. You can use these to drop down into Fog Rift Fort.
Once you’ve entered Fog Rift Fort, make your way through it normally until you eventually encounter a rather large fellow named Black Knight Garrew. This hulking foe can dish out some serious damage and has an unusual ability that fires out a tongue to grab you. Do your best to dodge all of this and whittle away at him.
When Black Knight Garrew falls, you’ll receive the Black Steel Greatshield as a reward. If only he could’ve dropped that weird tongue ability, too, eh? Maybe elsewhere…?
